Dear dignitaries, honorees, colleagues, friends and families,

On behalf of the China AIDs Fund officers, advisors, and directors of the board, it is with immense gratitude that we welcome you to our ‘Celebrating Life’ Gala on May 4th, 2024, at the stunning Terrace on the Park in our 21st year of operation. In remembrance of the indelible contributions made by Mr. James Pi, Dr. Mingder Chang, Mr. Jason Fu, and Dr. David Chiang, we honor their legacies tonight. Their unwavering commitment and immense contributions have left an enduring impact on China AIDS Fund, shaping our mission and inspiring a brighter future for generations to come. While historically supporting diverse groups of organizations in both China and the US, we recognize the evolving needs of our society. Therefore, we’ve decided to shift our focus domestically, aiming to empower Asian American youths in our communities through enriching scholarships and valuable internship opportunities.

On behalf of the Board of Directors and Advisors of the China AIDs Fund we would like to extent a warm welcome to all of our honorees, dignitaries, families, friends, colleagues and guests to our 21st year anniversary gala on May 4th, 2018.

This night marks a celebration of the transformative journey of China AIDs Fund, focusing on empowering Asian American youths and fostering community strength since 2003. As we honor the legacies of Mr. James Pi, Dr. Mingder Chang, Mr. Jason Fu, and Dr. David Chiang, we also recognize our recent shift in focus to the domestic front, dedicated to uplifting Asian American communities through impactful scholarships and valuable internship opportunities.

ASIAN AMERICAN YOUTH PROGRAM

Everyone one of us has a story to tell.

The Asian American Youth Project (AAYP) is a youth community-based program supported by the non-profit organization China AIDs Fund, Inc. (CAF). Its mission is to encourage Asian American youth to speak out about their experiences growing up at the intersection of two cultures. The AAYP aims to help youth turn their experiences of diversity and adversity into strengths, grow in self-awareness and become a part of a larger community that inspires others to reach their full potential as leaders and thinkers.

Evelyn Choong

AAYP Winner of 2017, Choong’s academic journey at Stony Brook University, where she graduated as part of the Class of 2022, is characterized by dynamic involvement and leadership roles. Throughout her undergraduate years, Choong played a pivotal role in the Korean Student Association, serving as the former grade representative, secretary, and president for a total of three years. Her dedication to fostering a sense of community and leadership is evident in her contributions to this student organization.

In addition to her leadership roles, Choong actively engaged in scientific inquiry as part of a research lab for two years. Her commitment to advancing knowledge culminated in presenting an experiment on cilia proteins at the Stony Brook University Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities symposium. Notably, Choong also demonstrated a passion for community service as a community engagement intern during her freshman year for the Stony Brook Center of Civic Justice, showcasing her multifaceted commitment to both academic and community pursuits.

Garhay Mei

AAYP Winner of 2017, Mei’s journey has been marked by both academic excellence and professional achievement. Graduating as a distinguished member of the Class of 2022, Mei completed her undergraduate studies at the Fashion Institute of Technology.

Currently, Mei has translated her passion and skills into the professional realm, serving as an Account Coordinator at Helen of Troy. In this role, she brings her expertise and dedication to contribute to the success of the organization. Mei’s trajectory from academia to the professional world exemplifies her commitment to continuous growth and success.

Katherine Chen

“AAYP Winner of 2019, Chen is an exemplary student currently enrolled at George Washington University, expected to graduate in the Class of 2024. Her active involvement in campus life is evident through her participation in organizations such as George Washington University’s Red Cross chapter and the Chinese American Student Association (CASA). Beyond her academic pursuits, Chen dedicates her time as a volunteer Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) for both George Washington University’s student-led ambulance and George Washington University’s EMS, providing essential emergency medical services to students, staff, and the broader DC community.

In addition to her hands-on contributions, Chen serves as an Undergraduate Research Assistant at The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences, showcasing her commitment to advancing knowledge in the medical field. Chen’s multifaceted engagement underscores her dedication to both community service and academic excellence, aligning with the qualities that earned her recognition as the AAYP Winner of 2019.

Katherine Hui

AAYP Winner of 2018, Hui, a distinguished graduate from Rice University’s Class of 2023, is currently pursuing a Bachelors in Architecture with an expected graduation in 2025. Her impactful journey at Rice reflects a dynamic engagement across various roles, including President of the Rice Architecture Society, Co-President of Design for America, and Head Photo Editor of The Rice Thresher.

Beyond her leadership roles, Hui’s commitment extends to community service, demonstrated through her volunteer work with the Sunrise Movement/Climate Urgency in the Built Environment in New York City. Her global perspective is evident in receiving the Wagoner Fellowship for urban photography research in Portugal during the summer of 2022. Currently, Hui brings her diverse skills and experiences to WXY Architecture + Urban Design, where she serves as an Architecture Preceptor, showcasing the multidimensional impact of her academic and professional journey.

Kitri Sundaram

AAYP Winner of 2016, Sundaram, a distinguished alumna of Brown University’s Class of 2021, has carved an impressive path in her journey. During her undergraduate years, she actively participated in various facets of campus life, contributing significantly to the Ivy Film Festival, Brown Motion Pictures, International Writers’ Blog, and Kappa Alpha Theta.

Sundaram’s commitment to the world of film and television is evident as she currently holds the position of Film & TV Assistant at Blackmaled Productions, showcasing her dedication to the industry. Her multifaceted engagement during her time at Brown reflects the passion and versatility that have become synonymous with her professional pursuits.

Kristin Hon

AAYP Winner of 2015, Hon graduated with distinction from Wellesley College as part of the Class of 2023. During her undergraduate years, she actively participated in the Hippocratic Society and the Society of Physics Students, showcasing her dedication to both medical and physics-related pursuits.

Hon currently serves as a Research Assistant, contributing her skills and knowledge to her chosen field. Her academic journey, marked by active engagement and excellence, reflects the qualities that earned her recognition as the AAYP Winner of 2015.

Maisha Maliha

AAYP Winner of 2015, Maliha is currently pursuing her academic journey at CUNY Brooklyn College with an expected graduation in the Class of 2024. Maliha’s commitment to education and excellence was recognized with the AAYP award, setting the stage for her ongoing academic pursuits.

In parallel with her studies, Maliha is gaining practical experience as a front desk receptionist at a physician’s office, showcasing her dedication to both academic and professional growth. Her journey reflects a harmonious blend of education and hands-on experience, exemplifying the qualities that earned her recognition as the AAYP Winner of 2015.

Matthew Miyasaka

AAYP Winner of 2018, Miyasaka, marked his academic success by graduating from Harvard College as part of the Class of 2023. Throughout his undergraduate years, Miyasaka actively engaged in various aspects of university life, showcasing a diverse range of interests. His involvement included contributions to research at Mass General Hospital, participation in the Harvard Filmmaking Club, active membership in the Harvard Running Club, and dedication to educational initiatives at the Harvard Learning Lab.

In his professional journey, Miyasaka is currently contributing his skills and knowledge as an Intern at Regeneron. His transition from academia to a role at a leading biotechnology company exemplifies the real-world impact of his education and extracurricular involvement, aligning with the qualities that earned him recognition as the AAYP Winner of 2018.

Meril Mousoom

AAYP Winner of 2019, Mousoom embarked on her academic journey after graduating from Stuyvesant High School and is currently pursuing her education at Macalester College with an expected graduation in the Class of 2025. Mousoom’s commitment to academic excellence was recognized with the AAYP award, setting the stage for her ongoing pursuit of knowledge and achievement.

Beyond her academic pursuits, Mousoom actively contributes to fostering inclusivity and support within her college community. She serves as the facilitator for the BIPOC disability diaspora, a club dedicated to the well-being and representation of disabled students of color. Mousoom’s engagement reflects her dedication to creating a supportive and inclusive space within the academic environment, aligning with the qualities that earned her recognition as the AAYP Winner of 2019.

Nancy Cau

AAYP Winner of 2015, Cau, achieved academic excellence by graduating from Harvey Mudd College as part of the Class of 2021. Throughout her undergraduate journey, Cau actively contributed to the campus community through her involvement with the on-campus organization, Women in CS, showcasing her commitment to fostering inclusivity and gender diversity in the field of computer science.

In her professional pursuits, Cau has transitioned into a role at Capital One as a Product Manager, where she applies her skills to drive innovation and contribute to the success of the renowned financial institution. Cau’s journey from academia to a role at Capital One exemplifies the real-world impact of her education and extracurricular involvement, aligning with the qualities that earned her recognition as the AAYP Winner of 2015.

Nistha Bade Shrestha

AAYP Winner of 2016, Shrestha’s academic journey led her to graduate from Stony Brook University as part of the Class of 2020. During her undergraduate years, she actively contributed to the academic community as a Research Assistant at the World Trade Center Personality and Health Study. Additionally, Shrestha showcased her literary talents as a Writer & Editor for the Humanology Project, demonstrating a diverse range of academic interests.

Currently enrolled at Columbia University, Shrestha is pursuing her Masters in Social Work, reflecting her commitment to social impact and community welfare. Simultaneously, she contributes to Global Kids at Independence High School as a MSW Intern, combining academic knowledge with practical experience to make a positive difference in the lives of others. Shrestha’s journey exemplifies the intersection of academic excellence, research, and social work that earned her recognition as the AAYP Winner of 2016.

Shannon Li

AAYP Winner of 2019, Li stands as a distinguished alumna, having graduated from the University of Michigan – Ann Arbor as part of the Class of 2022. Throughout her undergraduate years, Li actively participated in various facets of campus life, contributing significantly to The Michigan Daily, the Women in Science and Engineering Residence Program, and GLAAD. Her multifaceted engagement reflects a commitment to both journalistic pursuits and fostering inclusivity and diversity.

In her professional journey, Li currently holds the position of Designer I at Nike, where she applies her creative skills to contribute to the renowned brand’s innovative projects. Her transition from academia to a role at Nike exemplifies the real-world impact of her education and extracurricular involvements, aligning with the qualities that earned her recognition as the AAYP Winner of 2019.

Sherry Chen

AAYP Winner of 2017, Chen has successfully graduated from CUNY Baruch College as part of the Class of 2021. Throughout her undergraduate years, Chen actively contributed to the university community through her involvement with Ascend – pan Asian Business Club, showcasing her dedication to fostering collaboration and excellence in the business realm.

In her professional journey, Chen currently holds the position of Product Specialist at Mastercard, where she applies her skills and knowledge to contribute to the company’s success. Her transition from academia to a prominent role at Mastercard exemplifies the real-world impact of her education and the qualities that earned her recognition as the AAYP Winner of 2017.

Xiaolin Rong

AAYP Winner of 2017, Rong is currently immersed in her academic journey at the University of Michigan, with an expected graduation in the Class of 2024. Rong’s commitment to academic excellence and achievement was acknowledged through the AAYP award, a testament to her dedication and potential for success.

As she continues her studies at the University of Michigan, Rong’s journey reflects a continuation of the qualities that earned her recognition. Her pursuit of education and excellence positions her for continued success, building upon the foundation of her AAYP recognition.

Madison Christine Li

AAYP Winner of 2017, Li, currently thrives at Emory College of Arts & Sciences, with an anticipated graduation in the Class of 2024. Li’s journey is marked by a diverse array of impactful engagements, both within and beyond the academic spectrum.

At Emory, Li actively contributes to cutting-edge research in Biology, Public Health, and Global Health, showcasing a passion for advancing knowledge. Her global perspective is enriched by a study abroad experience in London with the Sociology Department. Committed to community service, Li volunteers as a Labor Support Volunteer at Emory Decatur Labor & Delivery, demonstrating a holistic approach to healthcare. In addition to her academic pursuits, Li takes on leadership roles as an Orientation Leader and Coordinator, contributing to the campus’s vibrant community. Her involvement in the Emory Urban Health Initiative and as a Phi Delta Epsilon member reflects her dedication to health advocacy and community well-being. Recognized as a James Weldon Johnson Institute Undergraduate Honors Fellow, Li’s ongoing honors thesis explores crucial issues related to race and difference, underscoring her commitment to impactful research and academic distinction. Sunny Zhao

AAYP Winner of 2015, Zhao, stands as a distinguished alumnus, having graduated from Boston University as part of the Class of 2021. His undergraduate journey was marked by active involvement in the Business & Technology Club, showcasing his interest in the intersection of business and technology. Additionally, Zhao demonstrated a passion for the arts through his engagement in theatre, contributing to the vibrant cultural fabric of the university.

In his professional journey, Zhao has seamlessly transitioned into the corporate realm, currently serving as a Sr. Financial Analyst at Quest Diagnostics. Agamjot Kaur

Last summer, Agamjot Kaur, a junior at Queens High School for The Sciences at York College, embarked on a transformative journey with a six-week internship at NYPQ Hospital, accumulating over 125 hours of firsthand experience. Fueled by a passion for hands-on experiences and a desire to forge connections with healthcare professionals, Kaur’s story is one of aspiring growth in the medical field. During her time at NYPQ Hospital, she said, “I got to witness the interaction of nurses, surgeons, and anesthesiologists with patients. Moreover, I was able to talk to patients and witness the recovery process. I would recommend this experience!”

Beyond her academic pursuits, she showcases multilingual proficiency, fluently speaking English, Punjabi, Urdu, Hindi, and Spanish. As an active member of the debate team, Kaur excels in communication and public speaking. Currently venturing into coding, her expanding skill set reflects a commitment to making meaningful contributions to the ever-evolving landscape of healthcare.

Julia Miyasaka

Meet Julia Miyasaka, a senior at The Dalton School, driven by a curiosity to explore the diverse world of medicine and a keen awareness of cultural nuances, particularly within Asian contexts. Miyasaka devoted 6 weeks to Mount Sinai Surgical Specialty, exploring fascinating practices such as surgery while expanding her Chinese vocabulary. Her invaluable advice to future interns is to maintain an open mind and embrace risks.

Proficient in Mandarin Chinese, she actively engages with language learning to enhance her cultural sensitivity. Julia’s unique blend of cultural awareness and medical exploration exemplifies a commitment to fostering a deep understanding of healthcare.

Keith Narayan

Meet Keith Narayan, a rising professional in the healthcare industry. Narayan underwent a transformative internship at New York Presbyterian Queens Hospital in the summer of 2023. His valuable insights reflect a commitment to understanding the intricacies of healthcare, as he urged future interns to connect with the courteous healthcare staff, emphasizing their willingness to guide and assist. When asked about the impact of the internship on his interest in the field, Keith’s response revealed a newfound appreciation for the critical role of the heart and the significance of electric pulses in maintaining a healthy heartbeat. In the ever-evolving landscape of healthcare, Narayan stands as a beacon of enthusiasm, ready to contribute to the well-being of others.

Brian Pae

Introducing Brian Pae, a dedicated individual with aspirations in the healthcare domain. Pae is excited about the internship program’s core objective — providing students like him with hands-on experience in the medical field. His eagerness to immerse himself in a practical learning environment, shadow professionals, and contribute to patient care activities reflects his commitment to exploring and building a career in healthcare.

Brian dedicated six weeks to gaining valuable experience at Mount Sinai Surgical Specialty, adding practical insights to his professional journey. Beyond his enthusiasm, Brian brings a set of skills to the table, including a genuine care for others, effective communication, quick learning, multitasking abilities, and a meticulous attention to detail.

Mehjabin Rahman

Meet Mehjabin Rahman, a compassionate individual on a mission to explore the profound calling of medicine. For Rahman, this internship is more than a practical experience; it’s an opportunity to gain a sense of direction and a deep appreciation for the privilege of helping others. She views medicine as a calling that demands commitment, sacrifice, and unwavering dedication, qualities she aims to embrace throughout this internship.

Over six weeks at New York Presbyterian Queens Hospital, Mehjabin immersed herself in the daily rhythms of healthcare, enhancing her communication skills, attention to detail, compassion, punctuality, organizational prowess, and adaptability. Her valuable advice to future interns echoes her commitment: “Be ready to interact and help patients,” a testament to Mehjabin’s hands-on engagement and understanding of the human side of healthcare. This internship has not only stimulated her interest in the field but has also allowed her to develop speaking skills, reinforcing her determination to pursue medicine.

Jefford Shau

Meet Jefford Shau, a healthcare enthusiast eager to embark on a journey of learning and positive impact. Through this internship, Shau was able to collaborate with medical professionals at New York Presbyterian Queens Hospital over the course of 6 weeks, delving into the field he envisions for his future. His goal is not just to gain knowledge but to actively contribute to improving people’s lives, reflecting a spirit of altruism that defines his approach.

With his New York State EMT certification, Jefford brings a wealth of skills, including vital sign monitoring and previous patient contact exposure. His hands-on experience has not only broadened his understanding but has also sparked a genuine interest in the daily responsibilities of doctors and nurses. Jefford’s reflections resonate with gratitude as he expresses, “Thank you for the opportunity! I loved being there over the summer!” His positivity, coupled with an appreciation for friendly staff, underscores the valuable experiences and connections he forged during his internship.

Mehruba Tithi

Meet Mehruba Tithi, driven by a passion for the medical field and a familial connection to cardiology, envisions the internship as a gateway to gain hands-on experiences. Her objective is to shadow healthcare professionals, assist patients, and deepen her understanding of the intricacies of healthcare. With a commitment to making a meaningful impact, Tithi draws inspiration from her family’s history of cardiology problems, propelling her toward the goal of becoming a cardiologist.

Tithi brings a rich set of skills to the medical internship, honed through leadership roles in organizations such as Stuy Med and Stuy Psychology, her school’s medical and psychology clubs. These experiences have cultivated her leadership, teamwork, and communication skills, making her well-prepared for the responsibilities of an intern. Her positive experience during the internship has not only stimulated her interest in the field but has also fueled her commitment to continue volunteering, marking the beginning of a promising journey toward a career in cardiology.

Fostering Knowledge and Empowerment

Since 2010, China AIDs Fund (CAF) has been dedicated to enhancing educational opportunities through the renovation and expansion of libraries across various regions in China. Beginning with the establishment of libraries in Shangcai and Shenqiu within the Henan children centers, CAF has continually expanded its efforts, collaborating with organizations like the Shanghai Sunrise Library to bring vital literature to communities.

In 2013, the collaborative effort extended to Zhuhe, Sichuan, introducing a new library stocked with AIDS prevention literature, health-related educational books, monthly children’s magazines, and a rich collection of fiction and non-fiction titles. The positive impact of these initiatives led to further expansions, with CAF financing additional libraries in Yonghe, Wongguqiao, Shenzhao, and Sanpo in 2014. Each library, equipped with over 4,000 books, serves as a hub for knowledge and enrichment, collectively hosting up to 400 students.

The commitment to fostering education is deeply ingrained in CAF’s mission, evident in the provision of AIDS prevention and health-related educational materials, monthly children’s magazines, and an array of fiction and non-fiction books. The collaborative efforts with The Association of Chinese American Physicians in visiting LiangShan in June/July 2017 reinforced CAF’s dedication, resulting in the establishment and support of seven libraries in various locations in China.

As of 2018, CAF proudly supports a total of eight libraries in Guozhai Anhui, Qianyang Henan, Yongli Yunnan, Dalingxiang Sichuan, Nancun Shanxi, Supo Henan, Zhuhe Sichuan Library, and Shenzhao Henan Library. Through these initiatives, CAF continues to create spaces that empower communities with the knowledge and resources necessary for a brighter future.

Adam Lu

AAYP Winner of 2016, Lu’s academic journey began with his undergraduate studies at the Rochester Institute of Technology, where he graduated as part of the Class of 2020. Continuing his pursuit of excellence, he completed his graduate studies at The City College of New York as part of the Class of 2023.

During his college years, Lu actively contributed to the Society of Asian Scientists and Engineers (SASE), showcasing his commitment to fostering community and collaboration among Asian scientists and engineers. Currently serving as a Senior Staff Engineer at Langan Engineering and Environmental Services, Lu’s career trajectory exemplifies the lasting impact of his early recognition, contributing to both his academic achievements and professional success.

Alexander Radu

AAYP Winner of 2018. Radu attended Stuyvesant High School, studied undergrad at CUNY Macaulay Honors College at Brooklyn College as part of the Class of 2023. He is currently attending SUNY Downstate College of Medicine expected to graduate as part of the Class of 2027. During his time as a college student he was part of … He is working at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University as a Doctor of Medicine Candidate.

Angel Zheng

AAYP Winner of 2016, Zheng’s academic journey at Stony Brook University, where she graduated as part of the Class of 2023, reflects a diverse range of interests and contributions.
